Many schools and tertiary institutions of learning in Kenya are not physically kitted with disability assistive devices. Further, the educators, staff, and school community are not equipped with information and training on conducive coexistence with children with disabilities.
Schools that have capacity and structures to accommodate children and youth with disabilities tend to charge education fees that are beyond reach for the caregivers that ADA partners with.
Due to these challenges, many children with disabilities, especially from areas of low income, are not enrolled in institutions of learning.
ADA will partner with government schools to offer DIET (Disability Inclusive and Equity Training), to empower the school community to accommodate children and youth with disabilities. We will seek partnerships with other organizations to enhance the identified schools’ infrastructure to make the physical environment conducive to children and youth with disabilities.
We will create a liaison between the schools and caregivers aimed at increasing school enrollment for CWDs. Further, we will seek opportunities for bursaries, scholarships and assistive devices for the children.
